As a purpose-driven and independent organisation, we are committed to providing high-quality, equitable healthcare to all Victorians – including those who are engaged in the youth justice system.
Guided by cohealth’s belief that health and social care are human rights, a feature in our Strategic Plan, we prioritise our services to people who are engaged in the justice system, in acknowledgement of the complexities of this population and their barriers to accessing health supports.
We have expertise working in complex environments with people facing a range of vulnerabilities and health complexities and believe we can build positive health experiences and outcomes for young people both within and beyond youth justice settings.
cohealth is committed to providing culturally safe care that is guided by the self-determination and voices of these children and young people and connecting them with ongoing health supports as they transition back into the community to ensure continuity of care and improved long-term health outcomes.
cohealth believes that healthcare providers can build positive health experiences and outcomes for young people both within and beyond youth justice settings. Healthcare providers can position themselves closer to influencing service and policy reforms to directly address and support the health challenges faced by children and young people.
At Parkville Youth Justice Precinct, cohealth’s diverse team of doctors (general practitioners) and nurses provide primary health and wellbeing services including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, mental health, allied health, general, and dental services.
At Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, cohealth will offer culturally safe primary health and primary mental health support provided by nurses (24/7) and GP services (on-site, part-time), health assessments and planning, medication administration; oral health and allied health.
The Parkville Youth Justice Precinct accommodates young people of all genders from 12 to 24-years-old who have been sentenced or are awaiting court for a criminal offence(s).
At Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct, cohealth will be engaged to provide a 24/7 primary health and primary mental health service to young male people, aged 17-plus.
cohealth aims to work alongside the children and young people at the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct, listen to what they need, and provide high quality, trauma-informed, culturally safe care.
Our Model of Care outlines an integrated, multi-disciplinary, wraparound service that aims to best meet the health needs of individuals.
There is also a strong focus on connecting these children and young people with ongoing health supports as they transition back into the community to ensure continuity of care and improved long-term health outcomes.
Lived experience workers support clinical and management/coordination staff on cohealth’s team at the Parkville Youth Justice Precinct. These positions include a Culturally & Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Youth Worker, and an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Support Worker.
