free naloxone

What is naloxone?

Naloxone (commonly known by brand names such as Narcan, Prenoxad or Nyxoid) is a medication which can reverse an opioid overdose. Opioids include illegally obtained drugs such as heroin, or legal drugs prescribed for pain such as oxycodone and fentanyl.  If someone you know is at risk of opioid overdose, you can access naloxone and know how to use it.

How can I get it?

Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, cohealth is providing naloxone for free for people who require it. You do not need to have a health care card to get naloxone for free and it can be provided to family members, friends or carers of people who are at risk of overdosing.

There are a few ways to get naloxone:

  • Visit a cohealth NSP – Braybrook, Collingwood, Fitzroy, Health Works or Innerspace for training and to arrange for a voucher to get naloxone from one of the local participating pharmacies
  • Visit your GP for a prescription, then visit a cohealth NSP for a voucher

Our peer educators can provide overdose response training and access to naloxone in an outreach capacity in the western suburbs of Melbourne. If you live in the western suburbs, call or text 0408 246 696 or email od.ed@cohealth.org.au and they may be able to come to you.

How do I use it?

cohealth provides training and a kit to help you properly use and store naloxone. Free naloxone training is available through cohealth’s needle and syringe program (NSP). Simply drop in to any of the cohealth NSP sites during open hours.

What will it cost me?

Funded by the Department of Health and Human Services, cohealth is providing naloxone for free for people who require it. You can get naloxone for free until 30 June 2021.
